The first real snow of the winter fell on Buffalo and, as usual, it was more real depending on where you were. At the salvage yard in Buffalo around a foot of snow dropped, but just a little south it took the big machines to move it all.
When you’re packaging and palletizing a rebuilt pump that a technician has taken time and care to masterfully rebuild, you take extra steps to make sure it's extra, extra protected.
Lifting, moving, and swinging a wheel loader engine is a one person job … as long as that person has a heavy-duty overhead crane to do most of the work.
Rebuilding parts from salvage is kind of like putting Legos together, but you start with the complete Lego model, take it apart, replace the broken Legos, put parts of the Lego model together, and send those parts to somebody else who already has the Lego model. It’s also kind of nothing like putting Legos together. Anyways, all the kids are getting Legos for Christmas.
Getting a stubborn bearing free from a massive bellcrank is all about elbow grease — the kind of elbow grease that you’ll find is easiest to apply when an overhead crane holds the bellcrank in place and a press the size of a Prius applies the force.
When it comes to rebuilding transmissions, disassembling the transmission is Step 1. It’s also Steps 2 through 200.
